Candidate Profile: Dr. Andrew Dean (Lakehead University)
As Lakehead University’s Vice-President of Research and Innovation, I believe that the university should work closely with Thunder Bay’s business community. I was born in Malaysia and moved to Canada when I was two years old. My wife and I moved to Thunder Bay in 2008 when I was hired as Lakehead University’s Dean of Science and Environmental Studies. Since then, we have fully immersed ourselves in Thunder Bay’s dynamic and diverse community.
I have just completed a three-year term as a Chamber Board Director and would be very pleased to continue in a second term. I have really enjoyed learning more about the business community while on the Board and believe that the advocacy role that the Chamber plays is vitally important to supporting business development in Thunder Bay. I have had the good fortune of being involved with numerous other advisory boards and committees in Thunder Bay. These include being the Chair of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute (TBRHRI) Board, a member of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Board and a member of the Executive of the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre Board.
The Office of Economic Development and Innovation, which is part of Lakehead’s research enterprise, works closely with local businesses on research, training, and aligning skills needed in Northwestern Ontario. I admire the creativity shown by our entrepreneurs who bring their ideas to fruition. As Lakehead University steadily increases its international enrolment, I envision this as a way that our university can be a source of new skilled talent for Thunder Bay businesses. I would be honoured to continue to serve on the Chamber of Commerce Board to advocate for closer relations between Lakehead University and local businesses.
