Status Cards Welcome
Introduction
The Status Cards Welcome campaign has been developed by the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, with support from LCPS Chartered Professional Accountants and creative support from Ingaged Creative Productions / Ingaged Creative Marketplace.
This initiative is an invitation to build a more inclusive and welcoming business community. Indigenous customers and the Indigenous economy are essential contributors to Thunder Bay’s prosperity. By displaying the decals, local businesses show commitment to inclusion, respect, and awareness of tax exemption rights under the Ontario First Nations HST Rebate Program.
About the Campaign
Language for the campaign was informed by Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and translators, including:
- Elder James (Jimmy) Mishquart – Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek (Rocky Bay First Nation);
- Elder Sam Achneepineskum – Marten Falls First Nation;
- Knowledge Keeper Leonard Dick – Fort William First Nation; and
- Charles Brown – Professional Anishininew (Oji-Cree) Translator.
The Anishinaabemowin (Lake Nipigon dialect) and Anishininew (Oji-Cree) wording reflect regional dialects, and phrasing may not align with all Anishinaabemowin and Anishininew speakers.
Understanding Status Cards & HST Exemptions
Businesses in Ontario must understand how status cards apply to HST point-of-sale exemptions.
- Certain purchases by Status First Nations individuals, bands, or organizations qualify for the provincial portion (8%) of HST to be relieved at the point of sale.
- Vendors are responsible for verifying the card, adjusting HST accordingly, and keeping records.
- Exemptions apply to specific categories of purchases; some goods and services are excluded.
