The Chamber’s Quality Management Task Force operates on a regular basis with a goal of promoting quality management awareness, recognizing achievement and educating Chamber Members and the community about the benefits that can be derived from providing good quality products and services. It is responsible for bestowing Commitment to Quality Awards to worthy Chamber Members as part of the annual Business Excellence Awards Gala.
As part of its duties, this Task Force performs audits of Member businesses nominated for a Commitment to Quality Award. This provides a remarkable opportunity for participants to see for themselves how various organizations have uniquely excelled at what they do, and also to learn from other quality professionals. The committee not only bestows awards, but also offers an opportunity for companies to be audited to principles of an international standard (ISO 9001), to see where they rank. In addition, when the opportunity presents itself, the committee offers learning sessions for Chamber or committee members.
About the Commitment to Quality Award
Any Chamber Member can nominate a fellow Chamber Member for an award. The Quality Management Committee reviews the candidate’s application and, after careful consideration, votes to approve the nominee for an audit. The Lead Auditor (one of the committee members) will then contact the organization to verify that they wish to proceed with an audit.
The audit generally takes two hours to complete by two committee members (auditors). A preset checklist is used and, although the presentation of objective evidence can be less formal than some audits, all winners do an exemplary job. A written summary (audit report) is produced with a final copy being forwarded to the audited business or organization.
The auditors then present their findings to the other committee members with a suggested numerical rating. When successful, the committee formally submits a documented recommendation (along with the audit results) to the Board of Directors for acceptance as an award recipient. Confidentiality of the information obtained in the audit process is important. The Board of Directors will make their determination and the recipients will be notified that their attendance is requested at the upcoming Business Award’s Gala in April.
Please note that this process is different from the Chamber Business Excellence Awards, which are subject to a nomination process, a full judging committee, and based on a point system.
Commitment to Quality Award recipients may be considered for a future award – provided that a step-change has taken place in the organization’s quality system and a period of three years has elapsed.
