Experience Learning: Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
Drake Reed, a Westgate CVI high school student prepares for a career in Skilled Trades as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician via the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) through Cooperative Education with Itec 2000. Co-op/OYAP programs combines in-class and on-the-job training opportunities to maximize student learning and skill development as they pursue the apprenticeship pathway.

Chris Massaro, Aqua North Plumbing and Heating Owner/Installer enjoys teaching a new generation about the skilled trades via the the co-op placement programs offered in Thunder Bay.
High School Placements

- WSIB is paid by the Ministry of Education
- students work 2.5 hours a day Mon – Fri for 14 weeks, typically September through January or February through June
- skill levels vary
- some students are in early career-exploration stage
- some have been pursuing Specialist High Skills Majors
- some are seeking apprenticeships through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program

WIL at Lakehead University offers employers four different ways to involve students in the workplace. These options are designed to give students experience in specific business tasks, activities or projects that will help prepare them for potential employment in their industry or discipline.
- Placement options include:
- Unpaid, For-Credit Work-Integrated Field Placement
- Paid Site Placements
- Paid Site Projects
- In-class Projects and Cases
- Students are enrolled in Lakehead’s Business program or Entrepreneurship Certificate program
- Available to private and public-sector employers
- A mix of paid and unpaid placements
