On July 20, 2026, President Trump announced 50% tariffs on imports to the United States to take effect in 30 days (August 19, 2026) on a wide range of products. The presidential proclamations can be found here.
The list includes but is not limited to items such as:
- Beer, wine, cider, spirits
- honey and other sugars
- make-up preparations and perfumes
- a variety of plastic, hides, leather, harnesses, cases and luggage items
- various saw blades, cutting shears and other tools
- Forest sector items including:
- Solid wood products: certain hardwood lumber (nonconiferous sawn wood), softwood veneer sheets, wood moldings and millwork, fuel wood, and wood charcoal.
- Engineered wood panels: virtually the entire plywood complex (tropical, hardwood and softwood plywood), veneered panels, laminated veneer lumber (LVL), particle board, MDF, other fiberboard, blockboard, and densified wood.
- Finished and semi-finished wood articles: doors and door frames, picture frames, edge-glued lumber, fence sections, wooden tableware and kitchenware, wood ornaments, and miscellaneous wood articles.
- Pulp: dissolving-grade chemical woodpulp and articles of pulp.
- Paper, paperboard and converted products: kraftliner, writing and graphic papers, coated papers and paperboard, tissue and towel stock, greaseproof and cigarette papers, wallpaper, and a broad set of converted products including corrugated boxes, paper bags, envelopes, notebooks, labels, and paper tableware.
No CUSMA exemption: The tariffs apply to all covered goods regardless of CUSMA eligibility; the U.S. has stated there is no exemption for goods trading under the agreement.
Exclusions: Energy products (oil and gas), potash, fish, critical minerals, and goods already subject to Section 232 national-security tariffs (e.g., steel, aluminum, autos, and softwood lumber) are excluded. Primary softwood lumber, timber and logs are untouched by this action; they remain under the separate Section 232 regime at its existing (lower) rates
