The Communications & Policy Specialist plays a lead role in the Chamber’s communications, policy research and development initiatives, furthering the interests of its Members and implementing clear, effective communications with all stakeholders. This is a full-time position reporting to the President.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

COMMUNICATIONS

  • Execute effective communications to address strategic plan objectives and to position the Thunder Bay Chamber as a “must-belong-to organization” that reflects the needs of the business community and champions the Chamber brand/image.
  • Manage Member communications, including but not limited to:
    • the latest weekly newsletter
    • Members Marketplace weekly email
    • Annual report to Members
    • Website
    • Social media channels
  • Write, conduct and analyze member polls and surveys.
  • Assist in the creation of communications materials for both internal and external use by other Chamber departments to ensure their consistency with Chamber policy, communications standards, and style guide.
  • Manage Choose TBay First promotional campaigns.
  • Maintain and annually update the Communication Plan.
  • Arrange media conference, briefings, and interviews, as required.
  • Prepare correspondence, speeches, speaking notes, and key messages, as required.

POLICY DEVELOPMENT

  • Research and develop policy positions, resolutions and other policy communication tools and provide related content for Chamber publications, articles and other communications.
  • Work with key Members and stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and relevance of policy development goals.
  • Coordinate and communicate with specific contacts within the larger Chamber network (i.e. other Northern Ontario Chambers, Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Chamber of Commerce) to ensure continuity and consistency of policy development, focus and messaging.
  • Provide support to Chamber Committees and Taskforces including development of agendas and minutes, meeting scheduling, and coordination of committee projects.
  • Monitor City Council, other community meetings and legislative activity to identify advocacy opportunities for the Chamber.
  • Maintain advocacy dashboard and issues tracking.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the development of annual strategic plans and work plans.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development and/or performance improvement plans, as required.
  • Prepare communications budget.
  • Attend chamber events and other external meetings as determined by the President.
  • Other duties as may be assigned


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Superior written, oral, presentation and graphic design skills
  • Strong research skills
  • 3+ years of related work experience
  • Excellent organization and time management skills to plan, manage, and execute multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment
  • Knowledge in website design, maintenance and usage
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, as well as Canva and/or Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop, WordPress, AI tools and sourcing data from the internet
  • Strong creative, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Highly motivated and able to work with minimum supervision and within a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Bachelor’s degree/diploma in Business Administration, Journalism, Political Science, Communications, Graphic Design or related field
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset
  • Valid driver’s license and use of personal vehicle is an asset

SALARY & BENEFITS

Pay range $42,000 – $54,000 depending on experience.
We offer a comprehensive health benefits package.
